Bordertown SA is a great place to ride with a number of bitumen and gravel bikeways around the town. It reminded me a bit of cycling in Mildura. Like Mildura, there are also some quiet, fairly flat bitumen roads in the area which lead to interesting places such as Mundulla.
Bordertown to Mundulla
Pigeon Flat Road had a bike lane for the first four kilometres out of town. As I continued on I came to this fork in the road.
A vineyard – always a tempting diversion. I checked Google Maps and it appeared to be a flat road and only three kilometres each way. However, I was expecting a headwind on the return journey, so it seemed best to continue for now towards Mundulla. Perhaps I could take this detour on the return journey if I was coping well.
As I approached Mundulla, I noticed this farm entrance.
I had learned earlier in the day at Clayton Farm Heritage Museum that the Wiese family (who had established Clayton Farm) had many descendants still in the area. This farm clearly belonged to one of them.
Mundulla
Before long I had arrived at Mundulla. At ten kilometres, the trip was shorter than I had expected. I took some time to enjoy the sights – the historic pub,
an old shop,
and the former Council Chamber – used from 1886 to 1904 until the District Chambers were built in Bordertown.
I enjoyed a leisurely icecream at the General Store opposite the pub before starting on the return journey.
Return to Bordertown
To my surprise, the headwind did not seem to materialize. If anything, it felt like a tailwind, so when I came to THAT fork in the road, I had little hesitation in turning on to Cuppa Cup Road and pedalling out towards the vineyard. I imagined that I would be very popular if I returned to the caravan with a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon!
Unfortunately there was no cellar door. I was interested to note, however, that the vines had obviously been there for quite some time.
It was a comfortable and easy ride back to Bordertown with lovely scenery on each side of the road.
As I cycled through town on my way to the caravan park, I visited the historic railway station
and passed the old pub.
I had cycled 29 kilometres and climbed 118 metres.
