Cycling around Uluru

One of my favorite cycling experiences ever is cycling around Uluru.  I did it two days in a row – the first day with my husband Derek and the second day on my own, borrowing Derek’s bike, which has fatter tyres than mine. There are a few sandy sections on the ride so it was fun to have the fat tyres – I had walked a few sections on the previous day.

If you don’t have your own bike with you, you can hire one from a company called Outback Cycling at the Visitor Centre.

When we were at Uluru, there had been a lot of recent rain so there were wildflowers everywhere, but I was so caught up in the enjoyment of the ride that I didn’t take many photos.

The path around the rock is intended for pedestrians as well as cyclists and while it was a bit busy in the sections that came in towards the base of the rock, most of the time it was easy cycling.

The full loop around Uluru is 14 kilometres and almost completely flat.

Another great bike ride in central Australia is the Simpsons Gap Bike Path which heads out from Alice Springs to Simpsons Gap.
